The Old Dominion Chapter

Our History

The ACHMM, established in 1986, was a professional membership organization grown out of affiliation with the Institute of Hazardous Materials Management (IHMM), which is the CHMM credentialing body. The IHMM is accredited by the Council of Engineering and Scientific Specialty Boards (CESB), and CESB also has many other accredited certification programs, such as the Board of Certified Safety Professionals.

Our Old Dominion Chapter was chartered in 2004, which represents all of the Commonwealth of Virginia, however, there is a national chapter which has a strong Northern Virginia membership component, and most of our regular attending members come from the Richmond-to-Tidewater regions.  We began with about 15 or so members, there are now over 200 EHS Professionals in Virginia, but again, most regular attendees still come from the Central, Peninsula, and Hampton Roads Virginia areas.

In 2008, ACHMM officially changed its organizational name to the Alliance of Hazardous Materials Professionals (AHMP), in part to accommodate and engage growth within the professional Environmental, Health, Safety, and Security field, on a global basis, focusing on “leadership for a sustainable future”.

The IHMM and AHMP, along with local chapters, encourage professional development and maintenance through work application and training; certification and re-certification every five years; involvement in the community, regulatory review, and even interface with media, as favorable opportunities come up. Specifically, we as the ODC and individual members, respectively, have represented our organization and skill sets, and presented learning experiences, at national and state conferences, such as the Region 3 EPA Conference, Virginia Manufacturers Association, Environment Virginia Symposium, the International Water Conference, and others.
